Music Video

This is Lily Allen, Smile this was one of my favourite videos when it first came out. The reason I chose this video was because I saw how important a narrative is in a video. This whole music video tells a story and although they use cuts back to her where she lip syncs her song we are able to watch and understand the lyrics of the song by the way in which it is acted out.
I think the music video is a really simple video and that's also why I also chose it because I feel this is something which is really simple to create and is something like what we could make when doing our own music videos. It also emphasised that a music video doesn't need to be complicated with special effects by having a simple storyline that an audience can watch, it sells the song really well and also works well with the lyrics.

Reflections

After returning back to school from study leave we have been quickly introduced to our new project and tasks that we will be working on for the rest of this term. Im really looking forward to everything we have got planned, I am interested in music and watch a lot of music videos on music channels however I do not know a lot about how they go about making it and what sort of thought processes happen in order to create the finished product.

From my first few lesson we were able to look at real music lyrics from 'In the Sun' by She and Him. This is the music video we will be re creating in the next couple of weeks. I soon realised music videos are not as easy as I first thought. From this I was able to see the key features which is the music, the lyrics and the visuals and the way in which they interact with eachother
I also saw how important it was to establish many different features such as

  • How they are designed
  • Genre
  • Narrative?
  • Band?
  • The way a music video must gratify an audience
  • the concept
Last Friday we were able to meet a director called Jake who will be working on the music video on our workshop day with us. He has worked on many music videos and adverts and was able to see how music videos are created in the real music industry. I was particualarly interested in the advice he gave us as I can use that when creating my own music video. He stressed the importance of working with what you have and not always taking music lyrics and taking them literally and turning that into a video. I think he was showing us that it is important to be creative and when working on a music set and shooting to keep the enthusiasm up as it takes a long time.

I also learn't how important it is to work with the artist and the budget. When you have a set important you must work with that and then talk to the artist as to what they want and what sort of video they are trying to create.

WORKSHOP DAY

On monday Jasmine Blackborow came into school to choreograph the music video that we will be re creating on the workshop day. I really enjoyed this as im not the strongest dancer however it was really fun just to get involved and work with my class
I learn't how important not just the dance move but also facial expressions and characterisation is in order to display the correct genre and type of mood. Most of the choreography are basic moved but it's hard to remember them all and also put expression and lip sync at the same time.
I'm really looking forward to the workshop day, it looks like it will be very hard work, effort however lots of fun. I have been casted as the main girl which I'm quite nervous about as it's a big responsibility and i need to learn the video really well!
However I looking forward to working with the director and see how the video will progress what cameras and equipment we will use and how the end product will turn out. It will be a long day but i'm excited to get into costume and work will my class and director to get an insight into how a real music video would be made.
