Technical Ideas

I've been thinking  about how I'd liked the technical side of our video to go. We had our tech rehearsal on Thursday and I think it went well but for me really highlighted how much tech, lighting and work is needed for us to pull it off.

I've watched a lot of boyband videos and from that I've noticed the sort of camera angles and techniques we need to be using in order to portray the pop boy band genre this will also reflect Carol Venallis as her theory uses:

  • lots of close ups and extreme close ups
  • style and framing should run through the video and should be obvious
  • The camera should move in time with both the music and the lyrics
  • Frequent master shots
Shots that I would liked to use in our video would be like these:
  • These shots show the band in a medium close up which I really like and want to use in our video. It shows the band individually and as a group.

  • These shots are key to creating the right image technically we need lots of different close ups and extreme close ups of our band, their face, their body, their look.

  • I really like this shot and I really think we can create this using the haze machine and the lighting in the Seward Studio this shot would be really interesting and would work well.

  •  We need lots of these different shots of the band individually. They are a new band and for our target audience they need to know each member individually and also as a group.

New Location

We were pretty much set on using the Seward Studio as our location for the whole video and we did of course have the worry that it could become quite boring and quite repetitive, however we believed it would work. That was until I found out about another location from a friend she showed me the website and as she has a connection with the owners of the location she spoke to them first. She then gave me contact details and I called up the Photographic location.

We have managed to get this loaction for free, they are happy for us to film and take photos, aslong as we dont play the track too loud. We have the location from 10 till 5 ( or when were finished). Jess and I showed Ms Blackborow the location she loved it and with her advice we are now cancelling the Saturday 6th November shoot in the Seward Studio and instead going straight to Lordship Park the new location.

We now plan to shoot bits of our video in the house which will give the video more perforance and we hope to create something more interesting with the band acting more. We want to play on the lyrics and pretend the band are living the high life and are living a rich life.

There is the possibility as we are not paying that they may have to cancel us if they get a huge money offer which we obviously understand. If this does happen we still have the Seward Studio and will take up our original plan.

Location

Here's just a few photos that I took using jess's camera during a rehearsal. It's all going to be shot in the Seward Studio which is really useful as its in school therefore everybody can get there easily, it has lighting, lots of space and will work well for the video.

( the curtains can be lit in order for them to look good)

( technical desk at the top so allows someone to watch and control lights)

                                           ( lighting equipment)

( seats will be folded back to create more space)

We have now successfully confirmed dates with Ms Blackborow and I recorded them on our group technical sheet. The dates that we have booked the Seward Studio and have been confirmed are are as followed:
  • Thursday 21st October- Technical Rehersal- 3.45pm-7.00pm
                                                       HALF TERM
  • Tuesday 2nd November- Dress Rehearsal-3.45pm-10.00pm
  • Thursday 4th November- Shoot- 3.45pm- 10.00pm
  • Saturday 6th November- Shoot- 8.00am-2.00pm
  • Tuesday 9th November- Back- Up Shoot- 3.45pm- 10.00pm
We plan to take test photos on the thursday also and then take real promotional shots on the tuesday the 2nd to use for our album cover and websites.

Detailed Lyric Analysis

I went through in the lesson out lyrics and wrote all the time codes out for each line and then we decied what would be happening on each line. It took quite a while but this will really help on all shooting days and should hopefully get things done quicker.

Progress

I'm really happy with the progress that our group have been making, we've been having meetings and working through new ideas and we are trying to organise ourselves before the shooting days.

For me, I think the priority now is to get going with sorting out costumes and rehearsal days. I want to try and organise another dance rehearsal with the band and group next week and we also have our techincal rehearsal next week.

We have confirmed shooting days for the Seward Studio which will now be after halfterm on the 2nd, 4th and 6th of November which work well for everyone involved in the project.

My only concern is if we have enough technical support for the actual shooting days as Hugh will be involved in the band and will have to dance etc. I am going to suggest to the group to have maybe a few helpers that can be runners and helping with anything on the day.

Dance Reharsal Day

We had a dance rehearsal day on the 12th of October and Jazzi Blackborow came into school to choreograph the routine. After I had contacted her and arranged times with her we had some sort of idea of what we wanted to create. In our lesson we went through the routine and below you can see me practising the chorus with Jazzi, Hugh and Tom

This was us learning the chorus part, it was quite diffcult but I needed to learn it in order to know it for the shoot and extra dance rehearsals

After learning the chorus routine, I then helped with music and I also worked with Jazzi to come up with new bits of routines and if I liked it and if it worked.

These pictures were off the band learning the dance with Jazzi, we learnt it during lunchtime and after school so it was a tiring day. However everything ran smoothly I leanr't a lot and we also got to try out the spacing in the actual location. The dance works well and by doing this made us think about more practicalities and costume ideas.

Record Labels

I have been doing some research into boybands and there record labels this can hopefully inspire us to create a unique record label for our band.

The Week Ahead

I've been looking at our timetable and with 2 weeks till half term im getting quite worried that we aren't making much progress, lots of things havent been confirmed and we havn't got set band members, set locations and we aren't really sure how the narrative will plan out etc

Therfore I've made a small list of tasks that really need to be sorted and have text round to Hugh and Jess ( toms isn't in school tomorrow) for a meeting tomorow lunchtime.

  • Sort out what our narrative is going to be
  • Check when band and group members are free for rehearsals and shoots-as we now know when Jazzi is free so we can work around that
  • Make a list of possible locations and send out emails
  • Think of band name
  • Confirm every member asap!
  • Starting making handout for treatment
  • Each do question for proposal
  • Gather anything that could help us with the project
Main thing is confirmation of band and confirmation of location and shoots so we can get started and start booking people, places and dates!
